The 2013 Subaru Legacy you see here is the newest demonstration fleet vehicle here at Cartronix in Valparaiso, Indiana. The Legacy belongs to Mark, one of our fantastic installation technicians. He had embarked on a simple audio system upgrade, but after talking with our AudioControl, Audiofrog, Stinger and SoundSkins sales reps, we decided to build that vehicle to use at the MERA Knowledgefest event in Indianapolis, Indiana. Here’s some behind-the-scenes information on this impressive Subaru Legacy audio system.
Foundation and Preparation
To prepare for the installation, Mark started by removing all the factory speakers and the stock battery. A Shuriken SK-BT878DT took the place of the stock battery. He ran 0 AWG Stinger power wire and speakers wires to the spare tirewell of the trunk. We removed the spare tire to provide room for the amp and processor rack. To ensure the Legacy would be a solid and quiet foundation for the new system, he covered the inside and outside of the door panels with a total of six rolls of SoundSkins SSPRO-1 sound-deadening material.
Audiofrog Speakers to the Rescue
We used Audiofrog speakers and subwoofers exclusively in this build. Audiofrog speakers have established themselves as the industry benchmark for sound quality and installation flexibility. A set of GB25 2.5-inch midrange speakers on custom-milled adapter plates replaces the stock speakers on the dash. Mounting rings are molded into the A-pillars and house a set of GB10 tweeters. This tweeter location offers excellent height and width to the soundstage.
The plan was to use a set of GB60 woofers in the doors, but there wasn’t much depth between the window and the door skin, so a set of the GS60 woofers will provide midbass from the doors. A set of GS62 6.5-coaxial speakers replaces the factory speakers in the back doors.
Dual Subwoofer Enclosures
Designing a shop demo car requires that the system is capable of impressing customers with a broad range of expectations. Mark decided that he would build a pair of subwoofer enclosures for the Legacy. He masked off each corner of the trunk and put down six to eight layers of fiberglass to form the back of the cabinet. MDF panels serve as the front and sides of the enclosure. Each enclosure is home to an Audiofrog GS10D2 subwoofer. Each subwoofer received a trim ring made out of MDF and wrapped in silver vinyl with a carbon fiber finish. There is a ring of LEDs inside the trim piece to show off the subs a little.
Amplifier and Processor Rack
The next task was to create a home for the system’s amplifiers and processor. The spare tirewell is home to an amp rack for a pair of AudioControl LC6.1200 six-channel amplifiers and an AudioControl DM-810 digital signal processor. We used the same silver vinyl on the amp rack as on the woofer trim pieces. Acrylic plastic mounting plates are under the amps, and the processor and are illuminated with RGB LED strips underneath. We installed additional Racesport LED lighting in the vehicle interior and behind the front grille for “car show” purposes. An acrylic plastic cover with the AudioControl logo protects the amp rack.
The LC6.1200 on the left sends power to the front tweeters, midranges and woofers. The amp on the right handles the rear speakers on channels 1 and 2, while the remaining four channels drive the GS10D2 subwoofers in a bridged configuration. A pair of single 0 AWG input to three 4 AWG output distribution blocks from Stinger handles power distribution duties. The DM-810 processor deals with all of the signal distribution, filtering, equalization and signal delay.
Fully Loaded Compustar System
A Compustar FT-7200S handles remote starter duties in the Legacy. Since this is a demonstration vehicle, Mark accessorized the system with a DroneMobile smartphone interface, the RPS-Touch window keypad and an EZ-Go proximity key system.
Subaru Legacy Audio System on Display
As soon as the installation was complete, we rushed the car to the Knowledgefest event, where it was on display in the AudioControl booth. Dozens of people got to listen to the new AudioControl amps and check out the amazing installation.
