A client from Portage, Indiana, came to Cartronix in Valparaiso for a major 2016 Polaris Slingshot audio system upgrade. He was happy with how the factory audio system worked but wanted it to sound better and play much louder. We sat in the cool little three-wheeler with him to understand how he liked to enjoy his music before we started work on designing a system. We knew that overall volume was important, so we suggested a speaker upgrade for the front factory pods, a set of new custom rear pods and a subwoofer. The customer agreed to our design but was reluctant to give up storage space. We knew he would be happy, though, and with his trust and blessing, we booked an appointment and started this cool project.
Front Speaker Pods
The plastic factory speaker pods in the front kick panel area of the Slingshot house a tweeter, midrange and 5-inch woofer. We cut the entire face away from the pod and created a new panel to be home to a Hertz Mille Legend three-way speaker set. We divided the ML163.3 Pro between two enclosures – the midrange and tweeter in a forward-mounted sealed enclosure and the woofer in a large, vented enclosure that offers excellent efficiency. We recreated the front panel with the mount for the large woofer out of MDF and finished the whole thing with a layer of fiberglass resin to protect the wood from the environment. The final finish was a texturized truck bed coating for maximum weatherproofing.
To protect the speakers, we formed grilles by pressing perforated steel into custom shapes. We sandblasted, cleaned, sealed, primed and finally painted the grilles to match the body color of the Slingshot. We created custom trim rings to match the sharp, angular design that is common to most components of the Slingshot.
Rear Speaker Pods
We fabricated a matching set of rear speaker pods for beside-the-seat bottoms. The pods house a set of Hertz Mille MPK165P two-way components. We finished the carefully sculpted MDF pods in the same truck bed coating as the front pods. We mounted the passive filter networks for the speakers in the dash of the Slingshot.
As mentioned, the client was hesitant to give up storage space for a subwoofer enclosure, but we knew that once he heard it, he’d be hooked and would want more. To house a Hertz ES200.5 8-inch subwoofer, we constructed a fiberglass enclosure in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat. We masked off the three-wheeler carefully and laid down several layers of fiberglass to a pre-cut wooden top panel. We had to share the space in the storage compartment with the reservoir tank for the three-wheeler’s custom air-ride suspension. We created a front panel with a teardrop shape that allowed us to locate the vent for the enclosure on the front. We wrapped the enclosure in red vinyl and the trim piece in black to further accent the vehicle’s cosmetics.
Power And Control
We chose a pair of four-channel Rockford Fosgate TM400X4ad marine amplifiers for the system and used an Audison bit10 to serve as our integration and tuning processor. We located the amps on a panel under the passenger seat and managed to sneak the processing into the dash behind the factory radio. The signal from the factory head unit feeds it into the bit10 to give us front, rear and subwoofer outputs with equalization and time alignment controls – perfect to allow us to tune the system for a smooth response. We wired the system with a pair of Cartronix motorcycle amplifier kits and Audison Connection interconnects. All the wiring behind the radio is protected with Tesa cloth tape to keep it secure and free from vibration. We protected any wiring that runs through the vehicle with braided plastic loom. While doing the wiring, we added a laser brake light and custom-made American flag LED and bracket on the rear of the vehicle.
Polaris Slingshot Audio Upgrade Wowed Client
With the system finished and tuned, it was time for the client to return to Cartronix for his first listen. He loved how much better the system sounded, and how loudly it was capable of playing.
