A client from Granger contacted Cartronix in Valparaiso after searching for a shop to perform a 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide audio system upgrade. We love working on bikes, so we were happy to invite the owner to the store so we could design a system for him. Once we had an understanding of his goals, we developed a unique solution that would provide the performance he wanted.
Factory Head Unit Reflash
We start all of our 2014 and newer Street Glide audio upgrades by reflashing the factory radio with our TechnoResearch programmer. The audio signal from the Boom! Box radio has all sorts of equalization that makes an upgraded audio system sound horrible. Not flashing the radio can also cause damage to new amplifiers and speakers.
Rockford Fosgate System Amplifier
We chose a Rockford Fosgate TM400X4AD four-channel amplifier from the marine series for this Harley-Davidson Street Glide audio system. We mounted the amp inside the front fairing on top of the radio, using the bracket included with the Rockford RFKHD9813 amplifier installation kit.
Front Fairing Speakers
The new Hertz MPX165.3 6.5-inch coaxial speakers have the same outer dimension as the factory speakers, but a much larger woofer cone. This extra cone area makes the new speakers a lot more efficient and allows them to produce more bass. We added a vent to each of the factory speaker enclosures to further improve their bass performance.
Custom Saddlebag Speaker Solution
To ensure the system can play loudly, we sourced a set of custom rear saddlebag lids that are color-matched to the orange finish of the bike. The new lids have provisions for a 6×9-inch speaker. We installed a Hertz MPX690.3 speakers in each cover. Wiring for the new speakers is wrapped in Tesa cloth tape and secured to the inside of the saddlebag. We added a quick-disconnect to the outside of the bags so the client can remove them without any hassles.
Audio System Testing and Configuration
We used our RTA microphone and oscilloscope to ensure that the polarity of each speaker on the bike would sum acoustically at the listening position. We confirmed that the sensitivity controls on the amplifier would allow it to produce good, clean power without clipping.
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Audio Delivery
Once the installation was complete, the client returned to Cartronix to listen to his bike for the first time. He was thrilled with the added output and clarity the new system offered. He remarked that the difference in bass response was like night and day.
