Valparaiso clients come to Cartronix to experience how we go about adding bass to boats. There are guidelines for adding speakers to get clear vocals and great sound. But, when it comes to improving the bass response on your cruiser, bow rider, fishing or wakeboard boat, things get a little more complex. Luckily, the staff at Cartronix are experts in the design and installation of marine entertainment systems.
Why is Bass Reproduction Important for Great Sound?
Bass is not just about the thump of a bass drum or synthesizer. The bottom two octaves of your music is considered “bass,” and there is a lot of musical information there. Having an entertainment system that accurately produces bass will make your music sound more realistic. Being able to hear the upright acoustic bass in a jazz classic or the bass guitar in your favorite heavy metal song will transform your music.
Installing a dedicated subwoofer is the best way to improve the bass performance of any audio system. The subwoofer will handle the reproduction of frequencies below 80 Hz with ease. Additionally, your smaller speakers will sound better because they do not have to work as hard. Your midrange and high-frequency speakers will be clearer and more detailed with less distortion when you add a subwoofer.
The Challenge of an Open Space
Unlike in a car or truck, a boat does not have a confined space to work with to produce great, deep bass. Our team needs to choose the right subwoofers, amplifiers and installation locations to maximize the performance of your marine audio system. With every nook and cranny of a boat dedicated to storage, this is a tough challenge sometimes.
Our fabricators can repurpose existing locations by reinforcing them to handle the vibration and pressure a large subwoofer can create. We will upholster these enclosures in factory-finish vinyl or carpet so will not be able to tell they did not come from the factory.
Marine Specific Amplifiers, Speakers and Subwoofers
All the products we install in boats are designed to withstand the challenges of an outdoor environment. Rain, wind, dust and sun exposure can quickly degrade a speaker or subwoofer that isn’t designed for that application. UV-resistant materials and designs that can handle rain, splashes and a thorough wash-down ensure years of great sound and reliable operation.
The materials we use during a marine installation are equally specific. Stainless-steel mounting hardware resists corrosion. Mold and mildew resistant materials ensure everything looks great. We are very specific on how we run our wiring, mount amplifiers and make electrical connections while working on a boat.
Proper Marine System Design
When we design an entertainment system for a boat, we need to ensure that everything is balanced. Adding bass to boats is not as easy as adding a subwoofer. If you have four pairs of speakers, then a single 10-inch subwoofer will help, but it will not be enough. Our audio system designs take into account seating positions, the intended playback volume and the limits of the electrical system on your boat. Sometimes an additional battery is required to extend play-time and provide adequate current delivery.
Creative System Solutions
In some boats, adding a subwoofer is tough due to space restraints. In these applications, we have options. Large diameter speakers like the 8-inch Punch speakers from Rockford Fosgate and REVO8 from Wet Sounds can produce impressive bass when paired with a high-power amplifier. We can upgrade small speakers to solutions that offer more excursion capability and drive them with good power. We never say no when someone wants more bass.
